The Serenity Garden

Bellevue Avenue resident Amini Sababu worked for years to establish the Serenity Garden as a living memorial to victims of violence on a formerly-abandoned lot at the corner of Bellevue Ave and Prospect Street. The pilot round of the THDC Small Grants program, prior to the build-out of the garden, enabled Ms. Sababu to work with THDC youth receiving web development training at Shiloh CDC to create flyers and social media for the Serenity Garden. This built citywide awareness of the planned garden before its launch in 2015 and mobilized numerous volunteers who helped with the garden’s initial buildout. Over 400 community members were engaged through this initial pilot project. The Serenity Garden is one of the signature initiatives we were able to support in the THDC neighborhood, with additional grants enabling Ms. Sababu and the core team to install important infrastructure and continue activities in the garden; this very first grant was key to starting off with a strong community that has continued to maintain the garden ever since.
