Echoes of The Great Migration

I Am Trenton provided seed funding for this unique creative project, anchored by original poetry by Pulitzer Prize winning poet and Trenton resident Yusef Komunyakaa. "Echoes" is a "choreopoem" that pairs lyrical narrative with music and dance to illustrate the experience of Southern Blacks coming to Trenton during the Great Migration. The piece is designed to be performed, drawing together words, music, and the lived history and craft of the creative team, which included global artists Richie Cole (who passed away during the project), Orrin Evans, and James Stewart. After an initial recording, the piece was adapted and expanded with original music by Vince DiMura, and had a premiere as a workshop performance in 2022 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church featuring vocals by Danielia Cotton, Adam Hyndman and Ty Stephens, and dances by David Austin and Heidi Cruz-Austin. The team continues to adapt and expand the piece.
